Mistakenly links high protein to the low carb high fat movement
I appreciate the intent of Dr. Campbell in promoting a return to whole food plant based food in the diet. I have followed an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet for 42 years. I have however been researching lower carb/higher fat dietary approaches over this last year. This was prompted by my experience as a Doctor of Chiropractic seeing a number of patients who improved their chronic pain patterns by adopting a LCHF diet. Dr. Campbell repeatedly referred to the low carb/high fat AND high protein in his criticism of this dietary movement. While there may be some who advocate the high protein component, I was not finding that in the low carb high fat dietary approaches that I was reading about. One example was the conference on low carb high fat nutrition that took place in New Zealand this year. In watching the many health care professionals who had seem so many improvements in themselves and their patients following LCHF dietary modifications, I noticed that they were all emphasizing that protein should not be high, but remain moderate. The main push was to lower the carbs and raise the healthy fats. The other common theme was to encourage people to avoid packaged foods and return to whole foods, to get their carbs from fruits and vegetables and to avoids sugar and starch laden packaged foods. I do see common ground here in both Vegan and LCHF dietary approaches where they are encouraging that the foundation of one's diet be a return to whole unprocessed fruit and vegetables. My critique of Dr. Campbell' book is that his linking a high protein component to the LCHF diet was an important error in accurately evaluating the current LCHF movement as it is currently being explored and researched.
