Completely Crazy and Clean Apocalypse with only Gorgeous Survivors
I like the concept of this story. A virus kills most of the people on earth and DOESN'T turn them into zombies. The people who survive develop special powers, such as the ability to heal faster, the ability to read minds, the ability to communicate with animals, etc.
Now, for the actual book. People get sick and die, but it seems like humanity goes quietly into that good night because there's very little panic, few incidents of "bad" behavior, and no dead bodies laying everywhere around.
The survivors seem to have it pretty good. They always have a place to stay. They always have plenty of food and water. There are hardly any incidents of violence where guns have to be used. It's a very clean apocalypse.
And all the people are beautiful. Dani, coming from the west coast and Zoe, coming from the east coast, are gorgeous and beautiful and tiny and petite and have hair down to their waists, which would be very inconvenient in the apocalypse. They meet up with other survivors to head to Colorado Springs where, supposedly, there is a colony of survivors.
Dani, who had been dying on the previous page, is rescued by Jason (Zoe's brother) and his army unit. He, of course, is absolutely gorgeous and Dani always had a crush on him. They had off to Colorado. Along the way, most members of their group develop special talents. Dani can talk to animals. Cool, huh. They also run into "Crazies". I guess these people didn't get a special talent and went crazy instead. Who knows?
Zoe, who also had been dying on the previous page, is rescued by a former boyfriend and they head to Colorado. Her special power is to read peoples' minds and memories. Zoe is rescued by another army unit and they stop at Fort Knox for the winter and meet a guy named Jack, who is, incredibly gorgeous. Of course he is.
There are so many descriptions of men's bodies, their abs, buttocks, arms, other interesting areas, etc. that it gets ridiculous. Ok, so I guess the virus only spared gorgeous men and beautiful women, too, along with making them psychic.
There's a bunch of jealousy stuff and injuries, which just slow both groups down from getting to Colorado. It takes forever for Dani and Jason to hook-up, even though they comes close about a hundred times. Zoe and Jack almost do it at the end of the book, but are interrupted by someone screaming.
I must say these men have incredibly self-control. They turn down these gorgeous women over and over again. Is that their special power? Stupid.
One funny thing: Dani mentions she's going to call Zoe and Jason tells her the phones don't work. So she just happily says, "I'll email her" because somehow WiFi is still working and continues to do so through much of the book.
The two groups meet up near the end of the book (with help from their psychic connection). It would have to be pretty awkward with everyone reading minds and Zoe able to see Dani sleeping with her brother (yuck).
Both groups also seem to get drunk a lot and there's never any mention of anyone keeping watch. Of course, each group has a wonderful dog that alerts them to danger, so why bother staying sober or posting a sentry? There are also people who gained bad powers and they have to be wary of them. Really, they do. They are very bad.
So, the premise for the book--good. The content of the book--completely unrealistic, filled with dumb characters doing stupid things, lots of sexual tension, but not much sex, so it's basically a soap opera in the apocalypse. Someone gets pregnant, too and the baby grows at an unnatural speed. I might have to read the next book just to see if the baby claws its way out of its mother and what its special power turns out to be. I know it will be one really beautiful baby.
