After Three Years Trying, This Stuff Actually Cleared My Drain!
I'm not going to lie, I really obsessed over using this option. I had so many preconceived notions of using lye but once I did my research I found that not only is it safe to use, but that it is safe for a septic tank. My wife freaked when she saw the bottle as she too had misconceptions about lye. First, let me say that lye is the active ingredient in many various drain cleaning products with many using it in combination with other ingredients.
Update: Four months later my problem bathroom sink drain is draining like there's a black hole under my sink.
My house has had a slow/stopped sink drain for three years now. I tried all kinds of products with nothing more than short-lived success - the slow drain always returned. I even hired a plumber and after at least an hour of snaking the line and checking the vent stack stated that I'd have to replace the pipes.
This is what I did: I ran hot water in my sink and let it drain. Donned in goggles and gloves, vent fan running, I poured about 1/4 cup into the drain and then poured about a cup of hot water over it. It bubbled and fizzed and then slowly drained. I remember reading about using VERY hot water so I repeated that procedure using a cup or two of microwaved water. This time, the added heat accelerated the chemical reactions and it sounded like a demon was trying to speak from the depths of the drain. It spit black junk up and out of the drain and made all kinds of noises. I flushed it with hot water after letting it work for a few minutes.
Simply stated, my drain has NEVER drained this quickly. I fill the sink up and then open the drain and it's like a black hole swallowing up the water! I am so incredibly and irreversibly impressed with this product and will keep it in my arsenal from here out.
Follow all precautions and ensure that you do not use this on aluminum, galvanized, zinc, lead or your toilet's wax ring. Wear goggles and gloves because it will probably spit up out of your sink!
