Great Product, Great Value
I have both the branded Amazon case, and the Moko case for my Fire HD. People have described the Moko case so I won't do that, but since I have both cases I'll toss in a few comparisons.
First, the Amazon case is slick--purely from a functional POV it's a good case. The biggest--well, only--advantage I can see is that it's definitely thinner than the Moko case. It's very well designed, probably a little nicer aesthetically, and maybe just a little more attuned to the functional specifics of the Fire HD in terms of the cutouts for attachments, etc. And it completely wraps around the device, instead of covering it like a book cover as the Mokp does with the edges mostly exposed. So, thinner, and a bit 'slicker' and maybe a little more protective against things like sand since it's almost entirely enclosed.
Here are the advantages of the Moko case. First, precisely because it doesn't completely wrap around the device the moko case is fractionally less wide and less tall--maybe an eighth of an inch. But the Fire HD is right at the size where that eighth of an inch can matter--as to whether or not you can stick it into a coat pocket, a pair of cargo shorts, or even (in my case since I'm 6'4") slipping it into even the front pocket of a pair of jeans. And also because it's not as sleek I'm more comfortable jamming it into 'marginal' spaces--there's more padding and solidity to the moko case, which of course is why its not as sleek and thin as the Amazon case. The Amazon case actually felt a bit 'warpable' when I jammed it into a jean pocket that pulled it tightly against my leg. The moko case isn't going to warp.
Secondly, there is really no 'stand' feature to the Amazon case, you simply have to fold it over backwards and let it sit like a tent. It doesn't have anything 'grippy' on the edges--it's slick!--so depending on the surface there's only so much adjustment you can make, and in the end its simply balanced. The moko case you all can see--very solid with that old backfold approach and adjustable. But here's the kicker--because Amazon put the recharging input at the bottom, wth neither device can you plug in the power cord while you're using it in the 'stand' mode, and since primarily you'll be doing that watching video that's precisely when you NEED the ability to plug it in. But with the moko, you can simply flip it upside down Amazon-case tent-style and now the plug is at the top and you can plug it in. Its not super elegant but at least you can do it and now you're looking at the device tent-style like you'd have to do with the Amazon case anyhow.
Which leads to another thing--just the general flexibility of use of the moko case. I didn't really care about the handstrap and interior strap, but now having used it awhile I can see that just maybe someday it would be nice to use that handstrap. At least its there, if nothing else I can stick my train tickets under it or something; who knows? The Amazon case has nothing inside--it's a slick plastic case with thin interior cloth padding.
Finally of course, the price. The thing is, it's not even a 'best value' feature vs price tradeoff--if someone were to offer to give me either one, I'd take the moko case anyhow for the reasons described above. But then on top of that it's well under half the price.
Definitely the Amazon case is thinner and a bit 'slicker' in appearance, and its perfectly functional. But for me, the very slightly smaller length/width meaurements of the moko matter a lot, and it's a little more usable, and of course the price difference is significant.
So I'll be returning the Amazon case. I usually don't do that sort of thing--buy two items to try knowing I'll return one, i just don't think that's right. But in this case--well, actually in this case I bought the Amazon case at the same time as the device with no intent of buying second case, but when I saw the moko version I figured I'd give it a try. And now having done so I just can't justify keeping the Amazon case, so it is going back. But to keep yin and yang happy I just bought a second moko case, this time in red!
Update Edit: Well the red one arrived and it was great, but I noticed the autosleep feature didn't work. I fiddled with it a little bit-w/o snapping it into hte case and just loosely opening and closing the cover activated the sleep, but once I snapped it in it wouldn't work. Sent an email to BSCstore, within an hour they'd refunded that order and said to just order another one! Looks like the magnet inside is just slightly off and just doesn't activate the sleep feature. I can actually slide it around when closed and sometimes see it activate, so it's just not quite aligned properly.
So, super case, and super customer support by BSC--you just can't go wrong with this case.
Update #2: Replacement case arrived today and it worked perfectly. Ordered Sunday night around 11 pm eastern and was here waiting for me today at lunch. So I think you can order with lots of confidence, they don't make the case obviously, but if something goes wrong they make it right. I'm going to go give them maximum stars--and the case itself is great.
