Warpage is normal !!
My review will be two fold. Discription of the product then explanation of why the purchasers writing negative reviews experienced their disappointment. A little education.
Mine do stain/tarnish when broiling but some glass-top oven cleaner and a stainless steel scrub pad takes almost all of it out.
They have medium carbon content. So yes... magnets do stick to them but they are still stainless. I'll explain further.
They do warp at temperatures above 375 degrees and extremely when broiling but is minimal around 350 degrees or below and as other reviewers wrote, return to shape upon cool-down.
They resist rusting well.
Now for the education part.
So if you want to know why..read on.
From all the negative reviews it is obvious that there is a large lack of understanding of metallurgy. The 3 main complaints are:
They rust.
They stain.
The main complaint: They warp.
Stainless doesn't mean "no stain". It refurs to higher rust resistance over regular carbon steel.
All steel is an Alloy (mixture of metals) especially stainless with the addition of nickel and chromium, the same metals used in chrome plating.
So in requards to rusting, all steel contains carbon that tightens the molecular bond in the steel. The higher the carbon content the more rigid the steel but at the same time it becomes more susceptible to oxidation (rust).
With Stainless steel, the higher the nickel and chromium content, the higher rust resistance and higher the manufacturing cost. Therefore, the more nickel content, the less carbon needed to maintain rigidity and nickel contains no carbon and therefore, is not magnetic.
The reviewer that wrote "stainless steel is not magnetic" obviously doesn't understand the difference. Some are and some aren't. As you can see now, it's all based on the amount of carbon in the metal.
As far as staining which is really tarnish, it is a reaction of the chromium to chemicals or excessive heat. Mostly from the heat.
As far as warpage, all steel sheet metal warps under heat. The tightness of the molecular bond in steel limits molecule movement causing expansion beyond it's shaping (warpage) when going between temperature extremes unlike Aluminum that contains no carbon and has more room between molecules for movement therefore, less rapid expansion but it is more plyable and weaker.
That's it. So now that you know the basics of why...the more you can know what to expect if you choose to buy this product.
