Too much of a good thing...
I began taking this over 6 months ago to boost my protein intake, help with recovery workouts, and help control my appetite as I started eating healthier. It is great for what it claims to do—beautiful hair and nails, dry skin disappears, my cracked and itching elbows gone, muscle soreness after workouts completely GONE (as in I didn’t even feel like I worked out.). For a while, it was amazing...until it was too good to be true. While I lost weight steadily and gained muscle over the first 3 months or so, after that, I experienced inexplicable weight gain and real fat deposits that I couldn’t just explain away with holiday slips into unhealthy eating. (This was happening steadily way before that.). Turns out, after digging around a bit, that if you already eat a protein rich diet, adding collagen on top is just too much protein. Your body can’t use it all, and over time, that excess is stored as fat. (I found numerous web hits and articles about this—other people explaining that the same thing had happened to them.). I have stopped taking the collagen, have seen my skin dry out and my elbows get sore and cracked, my muscles are sore again after working out...but my plan is to get back to my normal weight and shape and then only take collagen sporadically as needed, not the recommended daily dose every day. Unless you seriously lack dietary protein, you just aren’t going to need this in the amounts recommended. Hope this information is helpful to someone else. It took me months to find out why I was eating better than ever and working out consistently and yet my body was NOT responding how I expected.
