This isn't Wheel of Time
Yes, I've read the books, but no I was not expecting this series to completely follow them. However, that said, this series has zero relation to the books beyond the names of some characters and some locations. There are so many massive, fundamental changes to the story that it really does not bear any resemblance to the source material.
Baerlon and Min Farshaw, gone. Caemlyn and Elayne Trakand, gone, along with Elaida and everyone else introduced there. If you've read the books you know how massive their omissions are. Logain Ablar gets an entire episode devoted to him, even though in the books he's a footnote until very late in the series where he becomes a minor character. Yet Thom Merrilin, a main character, gets barely a mention.
Also gone is the entire culture of the world Robert Jordan created. The cultures of Tear, Andor, Altara, Cairhien, Illian, Manetheren (Two Rivers), etc ... they're all gone. All their distinguishing characteristics wiped away. When you see a new character, or just people in the background, you have no idea who or what, or where they came from because the world they chose to show is completely homogeneous. Six episodes in, the Aiel have yet to make an appearance, who knows how badly their culture will be butchered.
The Ogier are suppose to be non-humans, in fact in many places they often get confused as Trollocs. They're giant, and can't use human furniture for fear of breaking it. Harry Potter did a better job portraying Hagrid as a Half Giant than this show has in portraying Ogier which they've decided to make look just like humans, except big hands.
Rand and Egwene have a sexual relationship from day one, which they never had through the entirety of the book series. Perrin is not only not a blacksmith, but is already married, and promptly accidentally kills his wife. Matt's father is portrayed as a drunk abuser which is the exact opposite of his character. The Dragon can, and has been in the past, apparently be either male or female which contradicts the core premise of the entire series! The Dragon, male chanelers, and the madness is fundamental to the entire point of the story.
Why did they make all of these changes? Why did they change every single fundamental aspect of the story? They took the name of an extremely popular book series, Wheel of Time, and applied it to a story and world of their own creation, using that name only for their own gain.
This should never have been called The Wheel of Time. I feel sorry for Robert's wife Harriet who edited the book series if she knows what Amazon has done to her husband's and her own work.
