Knives are NOT 18/10. They are staining and pitting. READ THIS FOR HELPFUL INFO
Very sturdy. Nice weight to them. BUT - while this is listed as 18/10 stainless (the best for this application), the knives are NOT 18/10. They appear to be 18/0 . The engineering reason for this is that 18/10 does not hold an edge well. Magnets stick to 18/0, but not to 18/8 nor 18/10. Forks, spoons, etc, are all marked "18/10", and a magnet doesn't stick No staining or pitting (18/10 is very good that way). Knives are marked "stainless steel" (no indication of the alloy), and a magnet DOES stick so between that and the pitting, I am convinced that it's 18/0. Stains and pits. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Tried contacting Lenox. No response. Very disappointing. Used to be a reliable brand. We bought service for 16 and are now pondering whether we want to keep these. Very disappointing. Will wash by hand for now, but have not had to do that for the past 30 years with the Retroneau set I had previously. I hope someone from Lenox will respond to this with suggestions. My well water is not particularly hard, nor is it acidic. <<follow up, Feb 19, 2021>> Forks, spoons, all doing fine. I learned a few things about how to deal with the knives. I tried SO MANY THINGS since LENOX couldn't be BOTHERED to offer some SUGGESTIONS. Did I say "grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"? The spoons and forks are 18/10. The knives are 18/0. So they are different alloys. If you put two dissimilar metals together with an electrolyte between them, you get a battery, just like in high school science class. I tried many different things - detergents, rinse agents, etc. I tried putting the knives on the top (third) rack of the dishwasher. I found that any orientation that resulted in a drop or puddle caused an issue. Mixing the two alloys caused an issue. Here's where I ended up... Can't put the knives on that third rack because the drops will settle on the knife. Put the flatware in the flatware basket in the dishwasher, BUT PUT ALL THE KNIVES IN ONE END SECTION. Having them vertical helps with drainage. Leave the adjoining section EMPTY. Put other stuff in the other sections. You want NOTHING touching the pile of knives. DO use rinse agent. Do NOT use heated dry. It'll air dry just fine. Heated dry tends to exacerbate mineral or hardness issues. Wipe the knives with a clean dry dish towel when you put them away. And THAT is how you can learn to live with these knives. PITA.
