Consuelo's life deserves a better book
I am an avid reader of historical fiction and will take a shot at just about anything in the genre from a literary masterpiece to beach-blanket reading, but this one just doesn't make the grade. The subject is actually quite interesting, but the execution is poor. To really tell the story, the book should probably be twice its length; I have the distinct feeling that the author was meeting a publisher's deadline for she seems to be rushing through certain parts, skipping over decades, and trying hard to resolve everything neatly. There's a strange adolescent quality to the writing as well, as though a romantic schoolgirl was trying to write a book based on how she thought people spoke and acted in the late nineteenth century. With so many good books out there, don't waste your money or your time.
