very cool ideas, but it failed on execution
I bought this opener from another retailer but wanted to share my experience.
First, if you are an early adopter and are willing to take the associated risks, then consider this GDO. If not, go with a more traditional brand and type.
This is arguably the most innovative GDO on the market when you consider the horsepower and accessory ports, it's the first garage door opener platform. All accessories I tried worked as promised. I had the extension cord reel, Bluetooth speaker, and the back-up battery. Overall, very cool ideas, but it failed on execution.
In spite of getting high marks for innovation, I'm afraid that's where the goodness ended for me. A garage door opener should deliver years and years of care free, convenience. You just should not have to think about it. Not the case with the RYOBI. I have had mine for about 2 years and every 6 months or so it would just stop working. The first time it stopped was because the installers used existing wires and spliced then with the new wires for the sensors and keypad. Apparently this is a no no which eventually caused the GDO to lose all settings and rendered it inoperable. The second time it stopped working was because settings were lost again and it would not work until the settings were re-entered. Third time it stopped working was because, somehow, the door sensors went bad and needed to be replaced. Over the two years that I have had it; there have been a series of minor annoyances as well. When I used the built-in Homelink buttons in my car; they did not always work the first time I pressed the button. I would have to make sure the car was positioned just so in order for it to work. Never a big deal but really annoying when you are trying to get on the road to go to work. Also the outside keypad was quirky. On my old, decrepit GDO on the other garage door we have, you just press in your secret code and the door opens. On the Ryobi, I think you have to turn on the keypad on then press in your code, then press the up/down button and it *might* work. that always took several tries before it worked. What a pain.
So after two years...UNCLE...I give. I just replaced the RYOBI with a LiftMaster from Overhead Door. I already see a huge difference in quality and performance. I don't regret my decision to buy the RYOBI. As an early adopter, that's what I do, but I cannot recommend it. Perhaps a future generation will offer higher reliability. Once reliability is up to par with old school GDOs; then we will have a horse race. But until then, I cannot recommend.
