★☆☆☆☆
A soulless, self-conflicted, and poorly written mess
This show has all the visual trappings of the Peter Jackson trilogy executed without an ounce of competence. From set design to costuming, story pacing, dialogue and cinematography, there are so many confusing choices on every level. The entire thing feels like an over-produced, amateur fanfic that got HBO money. Almost every slow-motion scene is a laughably confused attempt to capture the style and tone of Jackson's films to the point it seems to mock them. The dialogue is incredibly cringe inducing and poorly written it comes across as parody of fantasy writing. Each episode jumps so frequently between a gaggle of characters it cheapens any significance their stories may hold, seemingly to fluff up the screen time and number of episodes in a season. Every episode is painfully formulaic in its structure and usage of tropes, it cannot help itself but remind you "this is a serialized TV show." I'm not sure if this product is all a result of heavy-handed executives or producers who are completely out of touch with what made the Jackson trilogy so successful, but the whole thing gives of a "too many cooks" kind of vibe and seems incredibly confused about what the show is supposed to be or is trying to accomplish. Not only is this one of the most expensive shows ever made but one of the worst fantasy television shows ever produced. No passionate fan of the film trilogy will enjoy this show, and certainly nobody is (or should be) paying for Prime Video to watch this incredible $1 billion CGI train wreck of a show.
