Not Sure If I Can Finish This One
I just forced myself to reach the 50% mark in this one, and let me tell you, it was tough. This book is cringey to the point of me actually rolling my eyes and groaning aloud while reading. I'm half-way through it, and literally nothing has happened. The protagonist is dull and passive, and the cast of supporting characters seem to serve for no other purpose than to stand around talking about what ISN'T happening yet. A lot of "So, you know, Bob..." scenes with completely unrealistic dialogue (that is desperately trying to be witty and failing miserably) and truly no other point than to explain backstory or context that could be revealed through...oh, I don't know...something actually happening? Is there a story here? Because it hasn't shown up yet with half the book behind me.
I knew I was in trouble when what I assume is going to be the main love interest, Austin Steele (gag) hits the scene and the extent of his characterization is describing his muscles in great detail and calling him the alpha. He might as well be a piece of scenery.
I almost wonder if this book is meant to be a parody. It's that cringey. If I do continue reading, it will be out of pure morbid curiosity to see if it continues being this bad or if it miraculously improves. Of course, I usually fall asleep about 20 minutes in because it's just so boring. So it may take me a while to finish it.
As a 46-year old woman, I was excited about this new sub-genre. I love paranormal romances, but get a little tired of the young and new adult stuff. The idea of a mature, confident, experienced heroine charging headlong into an adventure of her own sounded really great. Unfortunately, this hasn't lived up to my expectation. Pity.
