Sleek, practical compost bin that looks good on the counter
I recently purchased this compost bin to replace a couple dingy plastic containers we were using. I looked at a bunch of options; didn't want to spend an arm and a leg but wanted the bin to look relatively nice sitting on the counter. Pros: -Good price (I paid $18.99). -Sleek design; looks good on the counter and could easily go with any number of decorating styles. -Handle is actually functional (both on the pail and insert). -Cover easy to remove one-handed. -Nice size; gives us a few days to fill it up before having to empty it. -Comes with two charcoal filters. -I can run the insert through my dishwasher between uses. Cons: -I wish the cover would stay on the bin even without the insert in place; the insert creates the lip that the lid rests on. -The insert itself doesn't seem to take up the whole space of the outside bin, so it seems like I should be able to fit more food scraps inside. If I wanted to use the white bin by itself, though, the cover wouldn't stay on (per aforementioned con). Yet to be determined: -Curious whether the filters will do a good job, especially in the warm, humid months. -I've read that some people have more problems with bugs/fruit flies getting into their compost bins so I'm hoping that isn't the case here! -If the white lid gets dirty, I wonder how much of a pain it will be to remove the filter to wash it. All in all, I'm pleased with this bin and would purchase again. ***EDITED April 2017: I had an issue with the first compost bin getting some rust stains. Customer service was excellent; they replied to my inquiry quickly and offered to replace the unit, free of charge. ***EDITED October 2017: The compost bin did NOT become a fruit fly factory over the Summer, which I was worried about, but I have kept it under the counter. The cover of the original bin I ordered is getting more and more rusty with pieces falling apart, but the bin itself is holding up. ***EDITED January 2019 to add: The covers completely rust out and chip all over the place and washing them makes it even worse. You can still use the insert, but renders the whole thing pretty useless as a compost bin. You can still use the bucket for storage, and the insert for whatever... but that's not why I purchased it. Removing stars.
