These ship flat and are fairly inflexible, which is fine, except the weight of the person sitting in the middle of the mat tends to sink the middle of the mat into the carpet and raise the edges. My wife and I have sort of lived with it, occasionally stumbling over the raised edges, however, today she sent me a picture of a gash she received on her foot from a raised edge on the mat. In the same stumble, she also cut her toe. So, my advice is that although the mats are sturdy and have some good points, in use they are dangerous - especially to the elderly - don't buy these! I should have returned them (too late now) but it just seemed such a hassle at the time and we decided to live with the limitations. Not clever. Now I am going to have to toss them (we bought 2) and $80 down the tubes.
