Not Tom Clancy, but mediocre nevertheless
If you are looking for a continuation or a fresh start on the Jack Ryan series, turn away now. This show has neither the distinctive voice or realism. All of the characters are the same in name only and have been changed into everything Tom Clancy was not. If I was rating this as an addition to the Jack Ryan series I would give it one star.
If you enjoy the current crop of thriller TV shows and are looking for some more mediocre content, you might like this as well. John Krasinski does a great job here, no hint of The Office. Wendell Pierce drops in and out of a james earl jones impression in the beginning but pulls out fine when he gets his stride. Outside of those performances this is nothing remarkable. The small talk writing is poor, the contrived drama feels dated, it fails to meet current TV standards for production quality. The setting is office buildings and poor actions sequences.
Some reviewers are critical of a political stance they perceived the show took. I don't see that, and it certainly wasn't heavy handed.
The show finds a way to be both unoriginal and unfaithful to the namesake at the same time.
