If You’re Expecting Wii Sports, You Won’t Find It Here
tl;dr Switch Sports threw away just about everything that was good about Wii Sports and is an unfinished game. While I remember how much fun I had on Wii Sports growing up, we all know how iconic this game was. The music, the sports, the gameplay? 10/10 across the board. So when I saw the trailer for Switch Sports, I was ecstatic. That enthusiasm continued until today, the day it finally came in, and I actually got the chance to play it. At this point, two hours in, I’ve seen enough, and here’s what I have to say: What I expected would be a reskin of Wii Sports (better graphics, better motion controls, maybe some new sports that weren’t in the original) ended up being a huge disappointment. The gameplay is slow. Bowling, Tennis, and Swordplay play similarly, but all three new games have glaring flaws. Badminton is basically tennis. Volleyball is so slow and offers no dynamic gameplay and comes off almost turn based. Soccer is slow, and the leg strap only applies to one very boring game mode—Shootout, which is basically just a timing game since it’s just an open net. But it goes beyond the gameplay. Nintendo removed the rating system, instead opting for a “Normal, Strong, Powerhouse” 3-difficulty system. Normal is just easy. Strong is hard to beat. Powerhouse is near impossible. You may wonder what your incentive to play is if it’s no longer a rating. It’s cosmetics, which are only earned through online play, making the game pretty boring after a short period of time. All in all, this Wii Sports lover was massively disappointed. My recommendation: save your $50.
