Surely Conceived of By Demons
This litter (temporarily) ruined my life. It started out innocently enough. I thought, "hey, that seems like a cheap and eco-friendly alternative to our cats' usual litter! Definitely worth a try!" And I couldn't have been more wrong. I feel like prefacing the rest of this story with the assurance that our three cats are not shy to new litters. They've had clay, corn, newspaper, crystal, and there has never been a moment's hesitation in their little noggins. Even this litter, with its surprisingly large pellets, didn't give them pause to use it. For a couple of days, everything seemed fine. When it came time to actually scoop the litter, doubt crept into my mind. How could it be, a litter that is (by its very packaging, described as) "scoopable" be so impossible to scoop? The pellets were too big to sift through any of the litter scoops we had, but they were a necessary evil to get rid of the poop. All I could do was find the waste, do my best to carefully lift it without any excess litter, and valiantly shake out what usable pellets got scooped in the process without throwing the poop right back into the litter box and having to start over. Needless to say, it took longer than usual. Now, I don't know what ökocat's grand plan was as far as cat pee went, but I can tell you what actually happens: it dissolves the enormous litter pellets into damp, clump-free sawdust. So, while you're busy performing poo-extractions, you become increasingly aware of the fact that all of the pee-soaked litter is sprinkling through the litter scoop back into the litter box. Your mind reels at this puzzle. How... if you must preserve these gargantuan pellets to use later... can you extract the poop, save these precious pine boulders, AND also, SOMEHOW, get rid of all of this ammonia-rich sand now lining the bottom of the litter box? Answer: you can't. It's a Gordian knot. You can only scoop wildly, throwing away everything you touch and hoping that the end of your labors results in: "clean enough." IT IS NOT. Our cats, who enjoy litters of all kinds and diligently use their litterbox with no complaint, thoroughly lost. their. minds. Within a few days, the lingering layer of pee-sand covered desperately by the remaining ökocat litter chipped away the last of their patience and anarchy broke loose. Cat pee and poop started appearing all over the house. They started targeting things we cared about. This wasn't going to be solved by more ökocat litter. They were thoroughly done with this farce of a product, which could have only been conceived of in Hell, because I can't go on with my life imagining that not one, but SEVERAL, perhaps even MANY human beings with actual cats tested this product and didn't find major fault in it. After this experience, I can only imagine Sisyphus being asked by a helpful demon, "hey, do you want to take a break from rolling that boulder up the hill and try cleaning a couple litter boxes filled with ökocat litter, instead," then laughing himself to tears and saying, "nah, this makes me feel WAY more accomplished." We rush shipped some old fashioned clay litter. Peace has returned to our home ever since, with the cats' bathroom business remaining in the box until it's easily scooped back out. The descent into madness is finally over. PROS: The packaging is adorable. CONS: Useless; completely wrong for the job its meant to do; almost destroyed my sense of rationality; cats rioted.
