★★☆☆☆
It's a Fire HD 6 with a foam case and new, more limiting OS.
After our daughter commandeered our Fire HDX we figured it would be nice for her to have her own. Getting a 2 year accidental damage warranty seemed like a no brainer but you're really spending an extra $50 on top of the HD 6 for that warranty and a foam case. You get Amazon FreeTime unlimited included for a year, but so far I haven't found many apps my 2 year old can really use. Mainly she uses Plex to watch Disney movies and the YouTube app to watch kids songs.
This is where the Kids Edition falls short. The Youtube has issues with full screen when used under the restricted profile, it repeatedly tries to bring up the menu bar every second or two and causes the video to stutter. The Plex app works great, unfortunately with only 8GB of space on the Kids Edition with no expansion options or even the option to buy a larger size, you're limited to syncing one or two movies on it. We put 20 movies the 64GB HDX for a long road trip and it worked great, I foresee that still being our go to device for travel.
For the price with a 2 year warranty, it's not a bad device. It needs some software tweaks so that kids profiles work with all the apps that you enable for them and it would be nice to have different storage options as 8GB is pretty paltry.
Update:
Plex starting hanging in FreeTime mode as well, so I started to look into how to remove the child profile and use it like a regular Kindle. Tried deleting the profile, it just sits and spins until you reboot the device. Ended up resetting it to factory defaults and there was no way to configure the device without setting up a child profile and a pin. I eventually called Kindle support and they confirmed that you must use this device with FreeTime, there is no way to remove FreeTime as it's integrated into the OS.
It really is a nice idea for a product, but locking you into FreeTime and then FreeTime not working correctly with your existing apps is a deal breaker for me. I'm sending it back and ordered the foam case for our HDX instead. I don't think the Kids Edition is ready for primetime yet, but we'll revisit it once it's had some time to mature with the 2nd or 3rd generation.
2nd Update:
So today (Nov. 6th) they must have pushed an update out to the HDX that automatically setup profiles from the Fire HD Kids Edition to our HDX. This has gone from bad to worse, you send it back and it continues to haunt you, thanks for the late halloween "gift" Amazon! It forced me to put a pin in place with no way to cancel out of it, I was having flashbacks of the Kids Edition. Luckily I was able to go into settings and delete the profile as well as turn off the screen lock pin, but why was it forced upon me in the first place on a device that had been working fine?
