Tale of a Terrible Thermometer
I bought this product nearly a year ago based on the THOUSANDS of positive reviews. When I got it my first thought was: "How did THIS get SO many POSITIVE reviews??!!" It was made with, what I thought must be, some of the CHEAPEST plastic I'd ever encountered in a "tool", kitchen or otherwise - well, aside from kids' DOLLAR STORE TOYS! But, with doubts in check, I felt it was only fair to give it a fair shot. Though, I didn't expect it to make it to, much less to make it past, its year warranty. (As my tale begins, let me say that I ALWAYS handled my 'terrible thermometer' with care - EXTRA care!) Honestly, every time I used this thermometer I was pleasantly surprised with its speed, accuracy, and frankly, that it was still holding up well. But, around the holidays I started noticing some discrepancies with temperature, prolonged time to get said temps, and then of course, the mystery crack. The crack was right where the plastic ended on the probe. As time passed, the crack got worse, I wasn't able to close the thing at all, and the temperatures and times got worse. Enter the new year, and the break. Right around New Years the crack turned into a break and the probe was then, literally, "hanging by a thread - or wire in this case". Of course, despite my willing it to work, it did not. The last time I grilled out, it was in the 50s, we were around a small fire, and I was cooking - no BURNING - burgers in the dark. I wished I'd had a better light, because relying on the thermometer was a huge mistake that cost me nearly $20 in beef. It might not seem like much, but $20 is $20 and I HATE losing money, no matter how much, but especially from a preventable source AND from stupidity (my decision to rely on an unreliable tool)! I wasn't going to bother contacting the company and making a warranty claim, so I just threw the thing away, chalking it up to a learning experience. But, as I was perusing "digital thermometer land" on Amazon, I came across my little headache again. So, I felt compelled to warn anyone who reads my 'Tale of a Terrible Thermometer'. I've also decided to contact the company. I doubt they'll do anything since I have no pictures, or product, but at this point its about principle. Maybe I'll get lucky, but I'm doubtful and will invest in a better, more durable and reliable product. Its unlikely to be a ThermoPro product, but I cannot in good conscious judge an entire company on such a small product (not a fluke product either - I'm positive they are ALL made of cheap plastic, making it only a matter of time before they break). In closing, if I wasn't clear earlier, let me be so now. I do NOT recommend this product AT ALL! Good luck to all who decide to try it for yourselves.
