Beware of the 256GB model!!
Overall I can say I am quite happy with the XPS 15 9570. Build quality is top notch, the FHD display is gorgeous and not reflective, trackpad and keyboard are quite good, and the CPU and GPU (core i7-8750H and GeForce GTX 1050Ti Max Q) are very well ballanced IMHO. For a long time I was trying to decide between this one, the MSI GS65 and the Razer Blade 2018. At the end, what make me decide for the XPS was that I wanted a more complete package, while definteviley the other two are better equipt for gaming, the XPS has better battery life (or so I toght, read below), better build quality than de MSI and more... "comfort features" like a fingerprint reader and SD card reader while being cheaper than both with similar specs. My idea was to get the 16GB with 512GB SSD, but I had a very narrow window to buy it and only de 8GB, 256GB model was available, and since I was planning to add immediately a 1TB SSD I just took my chances. However, I cannot fully recommend this model (i7, 1050Ti, 8GB DDR4 RAM and 256 NVME SSD). The reason being that the manufacturer says in the Questions section of this listings that the battery is a 6 Cell 97WHr one, AND that it has a space for a 2.5" drive. The first statement is a blattant lie as this particualr model has the 56WHr battery normally reserved only for the base model 9570, and regarding the second statement, while the laptop indeed can accomodate a regular SSD or mechanical drive, the required connector from SATA and SATA power to the motherboard is not present, so you will require to order this specific adapter to make it works. So while this is a very good machine, I'm deducting 2 stars because: - The battery life is barely OK with this 56WHr battery (4-5 hrs browsing, streaming youtube, netflix). - I feel cheated, if they had either included the proper cable to connect a drive or listed the propper battery capacity I would have nothing bad to say. At the end, one very helpfull Amazon representative gave a small compensantion for this ordeal, since my particular conditions made a full refund quite complicated. My plan right now is to try to source the Original Dell battery and do the installation myself. UPDATE: After a few days with it and after 2 BIOS updates I have noticed a better battery life than before, browsing and youtubing now gets me around 7 hours, which is still a far cry from the promised 12+ hours but anyway, is an improvement. Also during this time the laptop has crashed twice while doing basically nothing... not gaming, not editing videos... just browsing and then BUM, rebooting, not even BSOD... Another weird thing happened just today when my audio device just disapeared from windows... Fortunately a simple reboot was enough to correct all this. I have heard before of the XPS line being a little bit unstable... and I always tought it was just stories of tech-chalenged people (I'm an Electronics/IT pro) but I guess they really earned the reputation. Finally I would like to add that upgrading the SSD and RAM cannot be easier (if you have the proper screwdrivers), I just prepared the windows creation tool, open the bottom pannel (I really like how easy it detaches, no plastic latches or any BS), replaced the SSD with a samsung 1TB 960 EVO, reinstalled windows in like 10 minutes, loaded the dell drivers page that automatically installed everything and that was it. I have had bad experiences with other brands that if you go to the autmatic option you end up with either lots of bloatware (looking at you lenovo...) or with misterious devices without drivers in device manager, so it was a pleasent surrise how easy it was. Final Update May 2020 So here I am less than 2 years after I purchased my XPS 15 and I have experienced almost everything that could go wrong, first the high battery drain while supposedly asleep, this crap could not survive a night unplugged (believe me, the settings in windows we're correct). Then finally Dell kind of addressed this problem with several and very unsuccessfull BIOS updates, well, after the second onem, for no good reason my XPS decided that if my Samsun NVME SSD was connected it would not boot, not even into BIOS. After several reflashes ant trying several things, somehow I findout that while the computer was still unable to go into BIOS, for some misterious reason Windows actually booted... so I swalloed my pride and continued using it. Then 2020 came, and I started noticing that my trackpad clicks were feeling unusally hard, I use a mouse most of the time so I just didn't gave it much attention... until it got much worse and I decided to open to see if something mechanical was broken... I found out a severly bloated battery... well... I'm one of those 100k trapped crew in a cruise ship, so a replacement was just imposible and continuing using the battery was a fire risk... so once again I swalloed my pride as an IT/Electronic Engineer, removed the battery and once again continued using the laptop. Finally, a few weeks ago the dumpster fire of laptop that I got, decided that it won't boot, but this time has all the simptoms of a hardware failure, I suspect that either my MoBo or my CPU are done for, a quick check online revealed that a refurb MoBo with CPU and GPU is going to be about 600 bucks... plus a new battery... to revive a computer that just don't work as it should... NO THANKS!! If it truly worked as intended it would be near perfect, the size and powered offered are phenomenal, the percived build quality is excellent, keyboard and trackpad are good enough for me, even battery life while being actively used was OK... but with the reliability issues I experienced in less than 2 years I will just stay away from Dell for a while. This thing is trully the Italian car of computers, looks gorgeous and it has an awesome performance... until it brakes again and again and again...
