Canon Cartridges, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Canon is slowly raising the prices on inks. as that is how they recoup their costs for the development of a dizzying array of printer models. I think they would would generate way more revenue if they just spent their R&D on three models of each type of printer, IE. inkjet, Laser, mid-range photo, and high-end proffesional printers, and made them more reliable and repairable. Until they figure that out they will keep generating unhappy customers that don't feel they are getting there money's worth. This misleading package is one great example of how to drive away your customer base.
Other options: here: on Amazon buy the 4 pack of #251 inks for $38, and the single page black #250 XL for $19, for a total of the same inks for about $58 instead of $81. ( here as of July 3rd, '14)
Also, Costco sells a similar pack in stores only ( not seen online) for $80 but there is a huge difference in the "yield" you will get. Not just the Page Black is XL, but ALL the cartidges are, probably what most people think is what they are getting here. That Costco package also states the mililiters of ink you are getting in each cartridge, 11 mls for each of the 4 #251's and 22 ml for the #250 PGBK. I looked around online to see the difference in the amounts between XL's and standard, but no joy, even on the Canon site they don't show any capacities for the cartridges, only XL or not and a price of $17.99 or $11.99 for those #251's.
But what they do show on their site is "Inkjet Page Yields", so for my MX922 printer they essentially show how many pages would be printed for each color and size of cartridge. For example for the Cyan (blue) CLI-251 prints 350 pages, for the larger CLI-251 XL you get 705 pages of combined text/graphic pages on plain paper, and for printing 4X6's photos, 121 and 270 pages respectively, so about double the yield from standard to XL cartridges.
