BEWARE -- Has Dangerous Software "Glitches" !!!!!
This was my original 5-star review from Oct 2012. I've now down-graded it to 1-STAR (see below!):
Love my 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat. I'm impressed by the software and the mechanical design of this gadget.
Yeah, $250 for a thermostat is a lot of money but you'll fully understand why people go completely 'ga-ga' over this device once you finally own one. It truly is "smart" and does an excellent job talking to your LAN Wi-Fi. Setup was a breeze with the thermostat's menu structure carefully walking you through the setup operation. The heavy, stainless steel band used in Version 2.0 of this unit that wraps around the outside screams "quality". It has a wonderful feel to it as you turn it to adjust the temperature setting.
It sounds stupid to love a product like a simple thermostat so much. Buy one, however, and you'll understand. It truly is like no other "smart" thermostat I've ever seen. The thought process that went into developing this lovely device puts companies like Honeywell to shame. Love my Nest 2.0 !!!!
==========
* Dec 9, 2012 --- Hmmmm, this NEST V2 seems to have some serious software "glitches". It got very cold this afternoon (wind chill 10 F) and I kept using the web interface to push the temperature up but the NEST seemed to go into an odd mode where it refused to turn on the heat. Once the house got down to 54 degrees after 5 hours of no furnace heat, I went down to the NEST to check out what had happened. I turned the heat further up from 70 to 75 but still the NEST refused to start up the furnace. I flipped the furnace room wall-switch off then on and still the NEST refused to start up the furnace. Finally, in desperation, I used the NEST's own menu to turn the furnace menu setting "OFF" and then back "ON". Suddenly, the furnace came to life... but then 2 minutes into giving heat the NEST suddenly turned the heat off again and started a weird 30 second count down before turning the heat back on. I use this device for my natural gas Bryant furnace which is 14 years old and uses a Red-White two-wire thermostat hook-up. I never had problems with my simple but kludgey Honeywell programmable thermostat.
Bottom Line: This nice looking device has some serious software issues. Had I been on Christmas vacation and this strange event happened, I would have come home to broken water pipes and very expensive home damage! Beware of this pretty device. It appears to be dangerously complex inside and has software issues that haven't been totally worked out. In summary..... IT CAN'T BE TRUSTED !!! That's a huge "no-no" for a thermostat used in cold climates.
