★☆☆☆☆
good writing -bad book
This author is a great writer there is no doubt about that. The characters were well developed the atmospherics were wonderful and he is joy to read. So why one star? Because I quit after reading about a third of the book. There is no cohesive narrative. He is telling a story. A story should have a beginning a middle and an end. This one had a beginning and then a big jumble that made me not care about the end if there is one.
Before this book I read a Harry Bosch book by Michael Connelly. Now Connelly and Whitehead are not in the same class, Whitehead being so superior as a writer. But Connelly sustained the narrative. He told me a story and didn't just put together pages of good writing which is what Whitehead does here.
I will try another one of his books.
