Not a true HEPA filter. I used it at a family member's house where my allergies act up pretty badly (along with their very expensive air purifier) and then took it home and used it there. However it seems that this thing isn't properly sealed and/or not being true HEPA started blowing out contaminated air at home the next night. I got so sick and realized right away that this is not for people with allergies. All the contaminants that passed through it at the stay at my family's allergy-ridden house now was trapped in the filter but blowing out with all the supposedly filtered air at home. This caused some serious and dangerous cross contamination, because the next night I got some of the allergens from my family's place all over my bedroom and I had a pretty severe allergy attck. We had to wash everything, disinfect everything and we very promptly returned this unit. Terrible product. Buy the Levoit instead, we bought a similar sized one to this and that worked so well we bought the large house size.
