Birx is bragging about her role in the blundered response
When I first watched Birx's public statements on tv, I liked her. She seemed measured and affable. When she was no longer in the public eye, I came to believe she was misguided, but I still had a positive opinion of her. But in this book, she comes off extremely narcissistic and lacking self-awareness. For the life of me, I cannot understand why she would want to publicly brag about her dishonest, selfish, & myopic measures that hurt so many Americans. She brags about subverting admin officials. How dare they question the delicate genius? She refused to accept any outside opinions in her odd obsession with the failed Chinese response. And here we are, 2 years later, and she still cannot admit the truth glaring back at her. No matter her intentions, no matter how badly she wants to be right, her ego has blinded her to reality. Our covid response was harmful, rash, & impractical. Birx is oblivious to the fact that her role in that response has helped foment skepticism & mistrust in our medical & federal leaders. I'm sure those who hate Trump will love her moxie (and that's really the book's intended audience), but for anyone looking for answers on what went wrong, this reads as a how-to guide.
I'm giving it 2 stars rather than 1 because at least she was honest about her deception. She just has no idea how repulsive & ruinous her actions were.
