This book, while displaying beautiful full-color works, also had an opportunity to showcase some of Mr Ito’s legendary black&white panels in this gloriously large print size. However this book fails miserably at showcasing his non-colorized work because somebody chose to convert all the black&white panels to a washed out faded grey in what I assume is an attempt at making them feel premium/different. Unfortunately, this change removes all of the stark whites and deep blacks which are are there to simulate harsh lighting conditions and evoke stronger feelings of horror. It takes his bold contrasts and washes them out into a hard to see gray blur that obscures the finer details in his line work and removes tension from his images. This is such a shame as this was a golden opportunity to see these images on a larger scale and it’s sad because otherwise the book is amazing. I would rate it higher if I weren’t so disappointed. You can see the difference in the photos but it’s way more apparent in person.
