Left wing fantasy gets old fast
I have read all of Follett's books, and enjoy the way he has traditionally use history to set a background for his plot.
In this book, however, Follett has decided to create a left wing fantasy of recent historical events. Reagan the "mass murderer" and Bush the "collaborator" do their best to ensure communism doesn't fall, despite the heroic efforts of the liberal characters. After the Berlin Wall comes down, Follett even invents a meeting in which Republican aides admit "Everything we did was completely ineffective" and then brainstorm about a "way to take the credit."
Unfortunately, Follett's rewriting of history becomes tiresome very quickly. Insults and cheap shots become increasingly common as the book move along. Eventually, the fabricated background becomes the story--not the characters. Unless you like this kind of revisionist fantasy, I would avoid this book.
