My breaking point with Turtle Beach
I've been a loyal Turtle Beach customer for many years now. I've owned many of their headsets and swore by them despite flaws. Honestly most of the time their headsets are pretty good despite one fatal flaw. PX5s crackled from wireless interference, Elite 800s were uncomfortable and the internal battery eventually only lasts a couple hours, for example. Despite that, I liked them for the sound profile (less muddy than the Astro A40s I tried), and the crazy features like Bluetooth phone pairing so I could listen to podcasts while I played Destiny. My expectations buying something like the Elite Pro, which requires a separate purchase for the Elite Pro T.A.C. and can cost a grand total of $300, is a product that's better than any previous TB set I've owned. My hope was that I was losing the wireless feature of the Elite 800s for better audio quality. I expected the T.A.C. to boost sound quality further and give me fine tuning ability. None of this is the case. No matter what arrangement I used, the Elite Pros had an audible hiss at mid-high to high volume whenever plugged into a PS4 controller or hooked up to the T.A.C.. The T.A.C., meanwhile, featured a slew of issues... 1) No way to turn it off so it's just running all the time if you keep it plugged into a rest mode ps4 2) Random audio quality and mic quality every time I turned the console on. People told me I sounded like a robot, a slightly better robot, or perfectly fine. 3) An absolutely alarming surround sound mode that makes any sound that's not center channel sound like it was recorded in a tin can. 4) A loud hiss accompanying any friends that chatted with me, completely ruining my actual game audio any time someone spoke or breathed heavy in a party. Each of these issues resulted in me spending hours looking for a solution online with no luck. I eventually figured out the solution myself: Turtle Beach is not interested in making a product worthy of the price tag. Instead they built a wall of BS YouTube reviews to trick us into buying snake oil. The positivity surrounding what I would call the most disappointing TB headset I've ever used makes me feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone. I decided that rather than hunting for solutions and assuming I was the crazy one, or spending days waiting for TB customer service to respond to basic questions, that I should just return it all and start fresh. I've ordered a completely custom setup with an Audio Technica ATH-M40X, Boompro mic, and Astro Mixamp. Fingers crossed this will solve my problems, but either way I'm officially done with Turtle Beach.
