★☆☆☆☆
Very troublesome activation, pairing, loose USB connector. Returned.
First impressions: Build quality isn't that great. Plasticy, molding marks, cheap looking buttons, flimsy clip. Oh, well -- this wasn't THAT expensive. On to activation... This has been my most frustrating experience in recent memory. I got the unit on Friday and read through the setup guide. I followed the instructions and went online to open an account and select my plan. After entering all my information, including my credit card number, I hit submit. The wheels spun for a couple minutes then returned an error message with no options to correct. I figured I'd still go outside and try to activate my unit. It searched and searched for a satellite before finally finding one, then I spent the next 45 minutes outside trying to complete activation. I finally gave up and went inside to log on to see what was up, but my account was now locked out. I found the number for support but they have 9-5 EST Monday through Friday hours. What? That was almost enough for me to write them off as not really serious about things, but since I was going out of town I decided to wait until I returned home to take another look before pulling the plug. Sunday I logged on and things looked like they might be working at the website (now unlocked), so I went outside and after about 20 minutes my unit was activated. Yippee! Then I went to pair it with my iPhone using the online instructions, but the unit would not double blink like the instructions stated it would. I went back to the support page and after four attempts at getting signed in and past their Captcha thing I still couldn't get in to see what was wrong. Aggravating! After all this and given the poor build quality (cheap feel, USB cover doesn't fit tight), fairly lame screen and clunky interface, and the general feeling this is going to be more trouble than it's worth, I was ready to pack this up and send it back. Monday morning I decided to give DeLorme service a call before shipping it back -- they did charge me the $19.95 activation fee of course, so now I had skin in the game. After 45+ minutes with a tech, including downloading the DeLorme sync software and updating the software, multiple resets of my phone, turning Bluetooth on and off, forgetting the device, etc. leading to about a half dozen failed Bluetooth pairings, I swiped on the device in my Bluetooth settings and it finally paired. Gotta give the customer service girl good marks for sticking with me, but in the end I did the final swipe on my own that finally made it pair. She should have known that. So, I'm hanging on to this thing I guess. I'm bumping my rating from 1 to 3 stars based on it this latest info, but the build quality still leaves a lot to be desired. I added contacts and preset messages online and synced them to my unit. Did some test texts and some tracking and it seems to be working. Interface takes some getting used to and I'm struggling with getting the quick texts to go anywhere other than social media. I guess we'll see how it goes from here. I'll update here if have something valuable to add. Update: Monday afternoon. Now the unit won't stay connected as it charges or while it syncs. There is significant play in the USB connection. I guess the cheapo build extends to something as commonplace as the USB connection. Enough is enough -- it's going back. Rating back to one star. This has left a bad taste in my mouth. Update Thursday: I had signed up for the yearly plan. I called billing to get that reversed they would only agree to refund 11 months. So I'm out for the activation fee and one month, $33 for nothing. Just a very, very poor experience and a crummy way to treat customers.
