★★☆☆☆
Not Melanin Friendly
Let me preface by saying that I have been an avid Cerave product consumer and user for a very long time. Most of my facial products are from Cerave. I was incredibly excited when they released this product as the pictures they used to promote it showed it being used on darker complexions. I am a Brown woman with warm undertones in my early 20s, no major sunspots, combination skin (or normal), and no fine lines or wrinkles (for reference). Here is a break down of the product: Protection: The product protects well against the sun—there is no denying the protection here. I determined this based on the fact that I have mild acne that gets irritated when exercising or is exposed to direct sunlight—I did not experience this with the Cerave product. Viscosity and color: The lotion itself seems to be darker in color, unlike the usual white color you get when using other sun products. The tinted lotion gave me a sense of hope initially. The lotion is a bit heavy and does not feel lightweight. Instead, I would describe it as putting a thin layer of Vaseline on your face. To say that it was a "light-weight" formula, in my opinion, and experience, was just not true for me. Application and more: Finally, the overall review. I tried this in a day to day wear and even put the product through a workout session. Workout friendly? Absolutely not. The product caked up and ran into my eyes. The pinkish-white color that it cast onto my face balled up and looked like one of those running paint lines on a wall after you have spray painted it. I do have to give Cerave the benefit of the doubt as they do not specify that their product is resistant against sweat but it is something to note. When I applied this product, it left a white-pinkish cast on my face. Nothing like the color that appeared to be in the tube when you first reveal it. Not to mention that it left dry, patchy spots around my face. Keep in mind that I do moisturize and use serums below so there was no reason for the sunscreen to make my face look dry, but it did. I mean, the fact that the product name is supposed to be "hydrating" should say a lot about the promotion of this sunscreen. Overall, because of this, I say that this product is not melanin friendly and I would not recommend for folks who have darker complexions. Additionally, if you are an oily or sweaty person, this is probably not the best facial sunscreen. I am not saying the product does not work, I am saying that it was not for me and I would not recommend for folks, again, who have more melanin in their skin. While some may judge and disagree with the fact that I gave this product 2-stars because it did not work for me or was not "made" for me, I would have to push back and say that Cerave did use models with darker complexions and gave the illusion that this was for darker skin. So for that, I give it an overall 2-stars.
