mapping software has become unstable overtime
This is my second Garmin device. When I first got this device, I felt it was very stable and reliable. After several map and software updates, it has become increasingly unreliable. Here are some examples -it will route you through weird loops and turn arounds ignoring obvious easier routes. For instance after one recalculation it added a 25 - 50 mile loop going way out of the way of the original route for no reason that I can see. -the only way to keep it from doing these weird things to the route is to put edit points all along the route to keep it from recalcing some weird detour. Which kind of defeats it's purpose, why not just have a unit that lets you plot your own route? -it doesn't calculate remaining distance accurately. So you will be 11 miles from your next turn and then it will suddenly change to 18 miles from your next turn, and then when you get to the next turn it will show you have 7 miles to go and then suddenly switch to showing you have 300 ft to go. -sometimes when you are getting back on a freeway and you can drive right onto the ramp it will want to go across the bridge to the other side, do some weird u-turn, and then come back, do another weird u-turn and take you right back to the same on ramp you were just at. It wasn't doing this when I first bought it and I felt I could rely on it. Now I don't trust it and that leads to problem also. Also, this device won't let you do updates unless it's connected to a power source, even if it's only a 1 or 2 megabyte download!. This is ridiculous, what is the point of it having wifi if you have to connect to do any kind of download? Overall, I think Garmin software is becoming very unstable and you don't need that when you are driving in the real world.
