I have been an Air Force BRAT since 1956 when I overheard a conversation (argument would be a better description) between my mother and grandmother. My grandmother had heard my sister and I referred to as "brats" and was taking great offense at the word. My mother was trying to explain that it was, in fact, a term of endearment used by parents and children alike to describe the children of military members. I decided, on the spot, that I liked the word when it was used to describe me. Anything that could get that big a reaction from my grandparents, in my defense, had to be a good thing. Very soon after my grandmother started calling us her "lovely brats" and letting the rest of the neighborhood know who we were. My world travels began a few months later that year and home became a concept rather than a place, but "brat" became a permanent fixture in my life. One of very few. CHAMPS??? NEVER!!! Even after raising my own "brat" and spending 22 years on active duty, I'll be a brat for life as well as a Vet.
