CITI IS A NIGHTMARE!!! RUN LIKE YOU ARE ON FIRE!!!
They have ZERO customer service. Nobody you speak to ever seems to be the right person or have the power to affect any change or answer the question you're posing. If you haven't made your payment by 48hrs prior to the due date, the endless "reminder" calls, emails and (if you were stupid enough to give them your cell phone number) texts begin to roll in...and they are nothing but a legal form of harassment.
AND THEY GIVE OUT YOUR INFO TO ANYBODY!!! I have never in my life received as much junk mail and telemarketing calls (even though my numbers are on the do not call list) as I did after opening an account with them. Every company on earth seems to be a "third-party affiliate" of these people and they are willing to sell you out to all of them. Not to mention, they themselves will call and email you nonstop about every single product/offer that pops up in the entire Citi corporation from credit card features (i.e. debt insurance, points programs, auto pay, paperless statements, etc) to bank accounts, investment services, mortgages, home loans, etc. And this is NOT targeted marketing!!! You will get info about every possible product available to anyone on earth! For example, my 19yr old niece...a typical, full time college student...was bombarded with offers for lines of credit, second mortgages, investment planning and IRA's after her parents gave her a Citi card to take to school for emergencies. They actually canceled the card because it got so insane and the texts were actually beginning to cost them money and could not be stopped with any amount of "communication preference" changes. And this story is NOT unique! The man power required to handle their marketing must be astounding, but if you need to call them for customer service, good freaking luck!!!
I have unique exposure to certain aspects of how they operate because a close friend is actually a bankruptcy attorney and has dealt with how they treat customers with any kind of problems (even if it's related to health or injury or some other completely innocent but tragic scenario) first hand: IT IS HORRIFIC. If close If you have ever had, could ever have, anticipate, worry about or think financial issues could ever effect you (i.e. If you're human) you don't want to deal with these people. They are almost blissful if you give them the chance to put your account into past due status (if only fur a day!). I think they have more staff to attack people then to help them. If are so much as 24 hours late on a payment you can expect multiple letters in the mail and your phone to ring off the hook from 7 AM until 10 PM...and continue even after you speak to them and explain the situation (i.e. Oops, tell them payment is on the way, error, emergency, etc.) as if nobody even noted the call in the system. If anything goes wrong, and payment is 30 days or more late, they will jack up your APR to 30% or more and even cancel the card abruptly and irreversibly (much more quickly than almost any other card company), leaving you with no other option than to either suffer with a crippling APR or set up a settlement with them to freeze the amount owed and establish a fixed monthly payment to clear the now closed account...this of course will DESTROY your credit rating but is the only way to get out from under a 30% APR if you do not have the money to pay off the balance quickly with a lump sum. AND then they can and will send you a form for your income tax return because the amount of debt that was settled can be considered "income"!!! For example, if you owed 6,000, but they agreed to write off 2,000, and you only have to pay 4,000 the 2,000 is considered "taxable income"!!! It's virtually the only company to go through with this step without fail.
THESE PEOPLE LIVE FOR FAILURE!!! GO WITH DISCOVER AND CAPITAL ONE AND DEAL WITH REAL HUMAN BEINGS!!!
