This is not the Japanese Motar of the same shape and color
I ordered this item few months ago, thinking this is moderately heavy motor that is sold in a Japanese store and an essential item in every Japanese kitchen.
From the picture on the web page, the item looks identical with the ever present Japanese mortar (Suribachi) in Japanese ktichens.
However this product is nothing but an imitation, the color and shape are the same but the material is made of something else. It is very light and do not work as motor to grind nuts or sesame seeds.
There was one review that alerted me that this item is not the same as one commonly sold in Japanese grocery store but I dismissed it because there were more positive reviews.
This item is made with such a light material it does not stand itself well while grinding nuts, sesame seeds and such.
I subsequently visited a local Japanese shop to get the right one.: identical in looks and genuinely made with ceramics. The weight of the mortar is very different and I can safely grind ginger, garlic, nuts, sesame seeds without worrying about the motor moving or even worrying about the Suribachi breaking down.
This item is so light that I have to to ask someone else to hold down the Suribachi while, if I can manage to grind anything in it.
