Magnetic force is awful
I tested the magnetic strength of 4 different magnetic strips/tapes. A 1” x ½” strip was attached to a flat wood surface and the magnetic break-away force was measured from a highly polished flat iron plate 0.25” thick.
Here are the results in oz:
4.5 Master Magnetics Magnet Tape
8.5 X-Bet flexible magnetic tape
8.5 X-Fasten flexible magnetic tape
11.5 Coitak Flexible Magnetic Tape
Clearly, the Coitak is the best and Master Magnetics is awful.
Note that these measurements are the pull-away force, not the sliding force. The sliding force reflects the weight that can be supported against gravity on vertical surface such as a refrigerator door and depends on the magnetic force and the smoothness of the surface (in technical terms, the static coefficient of friction). I measured 3 oz on a smooth surface and 5 oz for a rough surface for the Coitak tape.
