The most dissapointing book I've ever read. SPOILERS BELOW
* S P O I L E R S AHEAD *
While I really enjoyed the rest of the books in this series, I have to say that this is one of the worst books I've ever read, period. It really felt like the author was tired of the series, and just wanted to get it over with. There was very little Oberon, who has always been my favorite, and very little Atticus as well. The small part of the book that was about Atticus has him standing around doing mostly nothing. The writing was amateurish, the humor was just bad, relative to the other books, and the plot was severely lacking. Maybe Kevin had his dog write this one. I'm not sure how you could tell the difference.
There was no cool druidry in this book, and no cleverness to it at all. It felt more like listening to a teacher recite history in her best Peanuts voice than a fantasy novel. The way Loki and his crew were defeated was a total cop out, and did *not* get the time and thought they deserved. Every major battle felt like an afterthought.
The book started with Atticus standing around watching while Laksha kills Jormungandr. He goes down without a fight. Then we get some unrelated and pointless crap from Granuaile and Owen for a few chapters, then Atticus stands around and watches while the Yeti take care of Snurt. Snurt manages to kill two or three of them, but he still goes down mostly without a fight. Then we get more unrelated, pointless crap from Granuaile and Owen for a few more chapters, then Atticus stands around and watches Coyote kill Hel, who also goes down without a fight. Seriously, we're talking about one short paragraph for the freaking world serpent, and maybe a couple of paragraphs for the actual fights with Snurt and Hel. Well, after Hel goes down we're back to more pointless crap from Owen, but now, the chapters about Granuaile have changed from being just pointless, to preachy, self righteous, *and* pointless. Then, Atticus stands around and watches while Brigid and Granuaile take down Loki, in about one page. Predictably, the deal that Atticus made with Odin isn't good enough for Freja, who proceeds to cut off his right arm, thus messing up his cool druid vibe. Granuaile not only does nothing, but breaks up with Atticus and kicks him out of his *own freaking house*, because, ya know, Orlaith's puppies are more important than the dude that just orchestrated victory at Ragnarok, had his arm cut off, and lost his whole way of life *and* the woman he's deeply in love with. So, Atticus goes to hang out in Tasmania, has a conversation with the Morrigan, who tells him she loves him, and he figures out a way to maybe get his arm back. Oh, also, Fand, Manannan Mac Lir, and a few Roman gods die in there from time to time, in underwhelming ways.
There, I just saved you the entire read. The book is literally no more interesting than the paragraph I typed above.
The second eqilogue was the only part of the book that didn't suck, and even then, just barely.
I can't believe I spent actual money on this piece of crap. If I could give it less than one star, I would. This book is so bad, that it is the single reason why I won't be reading any more of this author's work. If he can't bring a series to a compelling conclusion, there's no reason to read the rest of the series, no matter how good it is.
