★★☆☆☆
Good product, questionable packaging.
First, I must make it clear that this product DOES work very well. I have no issues there at all. But... “Hello.” “This is Jean, the Postmaster,” said the angry voice on the phone. “What the hell did you order? What IS this stuff?” “Huh?” “We have a package here for you. It’s leaking some kind of chemical - it stinks! Did you order something? We need to know what this is! It’s ruined six other packages and got all over the mail! It’s leaking all over!” After a moment of thought, “Well, I think my wife ordered some shampoo from Amaz… WAIT. I bet it’s the weed killer! I did order some weed killer a week or two ago.” “Well what the hell do you want me to do with this?” asked the Postmaster. “Do I need to call HAZMAT?” “I dunno - if you need to know what it is, go ahead and open the package, I’m fine with that.” “I’M NOT GOING TO TOUCH THAT STUFF! God it stinks. I’m going to get everyone out of the building.” I heard a muffled, “gaaaaack,” then *click* Sure enough, a few hours later I went outside to find a package on my deck next to my mail. Even though the post office had double-bagged the package it was still noticeably odiferous. I put on my work gloves, grabbed the package, and went up to my shed to see what had happened. Inside the bag was clear plastic bag the post office had put on the package. I could see chemical gunk oozing out. Inside the USPS bag was the original packaging - a plastic bubble-wrap bag. I opened it all up as carefully as I could to find that of the two quart bottles of Amine I’d ordered had been crushed, and nearly all the weed killer had oozed out. (The shipper had simply put two bottles in a bubble-wrap mailer. I would have expected the package to be bagged and boxed, but what do I know?) I cleaned the mess up best I could, wiped everything down, stored the weed killer in a well-ventilated spot in my shed, washed up in the cold outdoor hydrant, and went inside to write a note to the shipper explaining the whole mess, asking them to maybe call the Postmaster to apologize. Within a day or two I received an answer from the shipper saying they would replace the quart that had been damaged. Cool ‘nuff. All this was a million miles away from my mind a few days later when I was out in my grove clearing a bit of deadwood and my phone rang. My wife. I pulled my gloves off and poked the “answer” button. “Hello?” “I need help!” *thud* silence. My wife is disabled and has many health issues. If Usain Bolt had been there, I’m pretty sure I’d have beat him to the house by quite a wide margin - in less than a minute I opened the front door to see my wife laying on the floor, walker on its side. Just as I reached her she went into a full-body seizure. I cradled her head in my hands to keep her from whanging her bean on the floor too hard and waited for the seizure to pass, but just a few seconds into the seizure she made an odd gasping noise and quit breathing. CRAP! The seizures happen fairly often, but it's rare for her to quit breathing. I held her head a few more seconds until her seizure rolled her over on her side, then I bolted to her room to get her nebulizer and asthma medication. Just as I had the nebulizer plugged in and the medicine was percolating into mist her seizure ended. I got the mouthpiece into her and kinda shook her a bit hoping to God she’d start breathing again. Thankfully she did, a very small gasp, then as a bit of the medicine got into her airway a very large gasp. Within seconds she was breathing normally again and regained consciousness shortly after. She gazed up at me, a tender look in her eye, and very gently said, “What the hell stinks? I can barely breathe!” I blinked at her for a moment, trying to figure out what… Oh crap! My gloves! I’d used those gloves when I’d cleaned the chemical spill days before! I’d dropped them on the floor by the door when I ran in, and I probably had some of the chemical smell on my hands as well from wearing the gloves earlier. As all this crossed my mind in a flash my wife closed her eyes and quit breathing again. In a whirlwind I got more asthma meds in the inhaler, threw my gloves out the door, ran my hands under the sink, and shook her back to consciousness again - again she was able to get a few breaths of the medicine in and was able to breathe easier and woke up. Within a few minutes her breathing had settled down and we were able to get her up and back into her bed… And life went on. Needless to say, I put up a couple hooks outside on the deck where I keep my work gloves now, and when I spray for weeds I entertain the neighbors by taking all my clothes off outside before going in for the day. So - as I said earlier, the product itself works fine and merrily kills weeds as advertised, no problem there. And the fact that it almost killed my wife isn't the issue either - it's powerful stuff and has appropriate warnings on the bottle. But I do wish the shipper had bagged and boxed the shipment rather than sending it out in a bubble-wrapped mailer - it would have saved me a lot of stress had they done so.
