What I learned from my "learning thermostat"? That it is a gimmicky waste of money.
Nest sent me a survey asking me what my favorite part about this thing is and I wrote: when I got to take it off my wall and reinstall my old thermostat. Seriously. First of all, it's not actually smart nor does it actually learn. If you don't walk in front of it every half hour, it thinks you're not home, activates "auto-away," and turns down the heat. Also, my HVAC was malfunctioning and was running my auxiliary/emergency heat rather than my heat pump 100% of the time. My electricity bill is FOUR TIMES what it normally is. You'd think a red flag like that might trigger a "smart" thermostat to alert you of the trouble. No such luck. Oh and one thing even dumb thermostats do is detect the temperature of a room. I think that's pretty fundamental to thermostats, in general, right. This thing always thinks it's anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees warmer than it actually is (see pic). The HVAC repair man told me to get rid of it. He wrote up a report saying that it was malfunctioning, so I offered to send the report to Nest when I called their tech support. ...But no, they couldn't care less what a licensed professional who saw it malfunction with his own eyes has to say. They led me through 50 minutes of BS troubleshooting and concluded it worked just fine. I've only had it one month and they can't even stand behind the product. Luckily, I'm able to return it for a refund. Already have the Honeywell TH8321 ordered. Good riddance, Nest.
