Not even beginners should buy this book - it has vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar errors.
In my original review (earlier in January 2019), I gave this book 3 stars because I thought the cultural background at the beginning of the book and the rather slow pace would be good for at least beginners, if not for those of us who are reviewing our German skills.
Now I would give it zero stars if I could. This is due to the increasing number of vocabulary errors I've seen in the book and to the pronunciation and grammar errors. One of the numerous vocabulary errors, for example, is the following: the English translation for MUMMEL (p. 15) is WATER LILY, and that is incorrect. I searched multiple dictionaries several times, and nowhere did WATER LILY show up as the English translation of MUMMEL. (MUMMEL is MURMUR in English, and WATER LILY is SEEROSE in German.) At least 3 more incorrect vocabulary listings (all on page 32) are the following: LIMONADE, PILS, and ZITRONENLIMONADE. Research results for these words indicate that the author's English translations of the words may have been correct 10-20 years ago but do not apply now; in other words, these translations appear to be archaic.
An example of incorrect (written) pronunciation guides is the following: on page 8, the pronunciation for the word EFFEKTIV is written "av-fek-TEEF": it should be "ef-fek-TEEF" (yes, it does make a difference when you're trying to communicate effectively with native German speakers).
Finding at least one grammar error a couple of days ago while reviewing the text for teaching has made me decide to throw away the book - literally. Not only does the book show an incorrect plural of a word (GLAS) in a list on page 128, but also this incorrect grammar point is reinforced in the text following the list: "Masculine and neuter nouns do not change to the plural in this instance: EIN GLAS BIER, ZWEI GLAS BIER." As with the vocabulary errors noted above, the multiple sources I researched - including at least 2 hard-copy grammar books - showed the plural as being ZWEI GLASER BIER (with an umlaut over the A).
There are two redeeming features in this book: the bilingual dictionary in the back and the good pronunciation tips for most German words, particularly for the "u with umlaut" sound - as in the word TUER.
These redeeming features do not, however, compensate for the abovementioned errors. I now do not trust this book to provide correct instruction in any facet of German language learning, so I will put it in the trash recycle bin.
