Pollution in the Baltic Sea
These are the absolute best sardines I've ever tasted. Came across them as a result of searching for sardines in glass jars instead of the typical plastic-coated "tins". But I was so sad to discover that the Baltic Sea is considered the most contaminated "sea" on Earth due to it being almost completely "landlocked", allowing for little circulation with the Atlantic and thus very little dilution of the PCBs and dioxins, in addition to the mercury that most people are aware of. While sardines are typically low in mercury due to being small fish, they were on the top of the list for levels of the "persistent organic compounds" in the studies I found with just a few clicks of a search engine. Drill-baby-drill, dig-baby-dig, bomb-baby-bomb. Over 5000 WWII plane crashes have been located in the Baltic waters, another contributor to what we've done to the oceans in the past 200 years. Like Joni Mitchell sang 50 years ago: "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til its gone."
