This is not Tolkien. This isn't even GOOD. It's so bad, just... don't bother.
This was one of the biggest series flops I have ever seen. Wow. I am so bummed.
Objections. 1) Story is too fast and too slow. Too fast (way too many independent storylines vying for our attention) and too slow (many scenes that don't accomplish anything take forever).
2) Too many characters introduced at once. Please focus on telling one story at at time, with one group of characters, please. My brain hurt after watching it.
3) Characters are unlikeable. They manage to make Galadriel an inconsistent mix of vengeance, egotism and naivete. They call that a character arc?? The series' best characters, curiously, are the dwarves! Elrond is pedantic and gullible. Halbrand is just... bizarre. I dislike him completely. It's as if he's trying to be Aragorn but... ew. He's not. (Did they want us to hate him? Who knows. It worked.) Arondir acts like a Vulcan. Sorry. In most of his scenes, I totally thought of him as a Vulcan. The Harfoots were confusing. Moss-wearing sprites. Not at all how I pictured Hobbit predecessors. Caring about one another one moment and then ditching the lazy and slow folks (oh well!) the next. Nori and Poppy's proto-Frodo/Sam relationship was completely borrowed and unoriginal. That's just a start.
4) Timeline and character outlines presented in Appendices by Tolkien are completely ignored. Wasn't that was this show was supposed to be based on?? Really. Characters were in the wrong places, storylines inventing "origin stories" for things like Mithril and Mt. Doom that fly in the face of written Tolkien Lore. And wow, characters practically teleport where they aren't supposed to be. That's fun. (Not.) Plus the Silmarillion aspects of the tales are danced around (due to copyrights), they ignore deep Tolkien lore and are forced to create grave errors on major plot points. It's laughable. This is not an adaptation. This is a mutilation.
5) (Do we need another reason to not watch?) The writing!! Dialog here is trite, BORING, and unworthy of the great literary skill of Tolkien's writing. Tolkien spend decades crafting something great, being a great linguist and literature critic; his original works will last long after this bizarre facsimile has been forgotten and buried.
6) The music was albeit, lovely. But it couldn't save this fiasco from drowning.
In short, I was horribly disappointed. So much potential absolutely wasted. I was soooo looking forward to this. I WANTED to like this!! I tried, darn it! There was just nothing to like! Casting was decent, but what could the actors do when the whole thing was riddled with a dozen other problems?? Amazon should have picked ONE component of the story to start with and done it WELL. Then the watching world might have given it a chance. As it is... sorry. May the RoP RIP. This show was utter fanfiction, and an epic fail. I'm back to reading (and immensely enjoying!) the books.
