Failed Twice In Less Than Eighteen Months
I don't think there are many people in America that do not own a Water Flosser, most probably one with the Waterpik brand name as they were the originator of the device. Our last Waterpik was the WP-100W which lasted for many years. I had two of them one lasting as I recall at least 5 years and the other about 7 or more....Let's just say a long time and leave it at that since that is my point. When I read about this one, with storage for two piks, I thought that would be great for my wife and I. I also liked the fact that it was supposed to have more power as well as a massaging mode. When the unit arrived, what concerned me was how frankly, flimsy it appeared in comparison to the ones I had had previously. Yes, my wife and I felt it was more powerful than the older version. Unfortunately and this is not a fault of the product, we found that we just did not use the massaging mode. Despite the fact we were careful using it, about 8 months after purchasing it, the unit died. I do have to say that the company support is excellent. They sent us a replacement unit which arrived in a little over a week. This was prior to the return of the defective unit. I subsequently called the company and learned that the on off switch had broken. I told customer support that I would rather pay more for a solid unit made in the United States that last a long time than for a flimsy unit made in China that though under warranty, might break within a year. I am not unsympathetic to a company's bottom line. We know why they are making them in China, but what it means is that the company would have to be convinced that people would be willing to pay more for the US, more solidly made product especially since other companies make water flossers as well. While it took a little over a week, we would really not like to go that long without our flosser. When the warranty on this one runs out and it becomes time to replace it, if the older version is still available and they do not start making a better one in the US, we would definitely purchase the older one. One caveat.....contrary to what people might think, water flossing is not a substitute for using floss. Water flossing has a definite positive benefit on one's dentition....but, you still have to use dental floss because it will remove harder material that water will not. Edit: 6-21-2019 The unit failed again two days ago. It is the same issue but a different manifestation. Previously, the on-off switch failed in the off position. I could not turn the unit on. This time the on-off switch failed in the on position. I am not able to turn the unit off. The unit has failed twice, each time within one year. As a consequence, I have downgraded the product to 1 star. Two failures in that period of time are just unacceptable. Many years ago I read somewhere that the Saturn V rocket used for the Appolo moon missions was built with such precision and redundancy that if a car were built with the same considerations of reliability, it would be able to go for 100 years without maintenance. Suffice it to say, I am sure Waterpik can do better than this. That said, consumers have to be willing to pay for such quality. Let me be clear, I think Waterpik is a good company. I think they, like many other companies due to competition and economic factors, have been forced to both use Chinese parts and manufacturing. Unfortunately, many Chinese companies do not have good quality control and some cut corners. As I said to someone in their customer service, I would rather pay more money to purchase a product knowing that it is of excellent quality and will last. for a reasonable period of time. As I said previously, we had an Ultra WP-100 which lasted well over 5 years. (I may have been several years more,) The bottom line is that I would not recommend this particular unit but go with the WP-100 instead. That said, since we had the last one, I don't know if there current production of the unit is as good as it was previously.
