BEWARE! Sonnet considers this product disposable once 1 year warranty is over.
I own 3 of these Sonnet Breakaway Boxes. The one related to this review (Breakaway Box 550) was purchased as a replacement for a Breakaway Box 350DE that was purchased directly from Sonnet Technologies back in Dec of 2017 using Amazon Payment Services.
The original Breakaway Box 350DE stopped working around Jan 9, 2019 causing POST errors been reported by the GPU Driver on Windows 10. The actual usage of the 350D was about 49 days since I didn't get around to using the product until late Nov of 2018.
Spent time troubleshooting the 350DE and came to the conclusion that it was the logic board/main board that has the PCIE/TB controller. (After replacing the power supply, graphics card, TB cable, using different laptops)
Contacted Sonnet Technologies customer support on Jan 16 2019 about the possibility of purchasing a replacement logic board to repair the 350DE based on my troubleshooting. I received a reply from a CS representative asking for the serial number for the 350DE to determine warranty coverage. After providing the serial number I was informed that my diagnosis was probably correct and that the logic board was more than likely the faulty item and that the case would be transferred to the department that handles RMA requests.
I received a reply from the RMA department on Jan 17 2019 and was informed that Sonnet Technologies does not currently sell the logic board separately and was advised to purchase a replacement Sonnet Breakaway Box 350 instead.
Given that the standard charge by Sonnet Technologies is $200.00 for servicing products that are out of warranty that might seem a reasonable suggestion from Sonnet's POV but as a consumer that answer is not satisfactory.
The entire point of getting an eGPU Setup is to be able to replace the GPU when newer models are available in the market. Not been able to have a reliable and serviceable eGPU enclosure is a huge drawback in my book.
This will be my 3rd Sonnet Breakaway Box, (550, 550, 350DE) had I known that Sonnet would not stand behind their products in regards to serviceability I would not have purchased the product in the first place.
To those considering the Sonnet Breakaway Box I would advice you to think long and hard. The product itself is well designed in regards to ergonomics, and touts that components such as the fan system that can be replaced for systems that use liquid cooling, but if the main board fails a consumer is left with no choice but to replace the entire eGPU enclosure. My original rating for this product was closer to a 4.5 since it was easy to setup and use, sadly the lack of availability of the logic board as a serviceable part forces me to downgrade to a 2.
Update: Decided to return the Sonnet Breakaway Box 550 since I am uncomfortable with the 1 year warranty, still have one working 550 from Sonnet. Will try a different product that is almost identical design with a longer warranty coverage.
