★★☆☆☆
Pretty sure Robert Jordan would have a stroke if he could see this train wreck.
I have been reading (and re-reading) the WoT series for 20 years. I am in love with the story and the characters and Jordan's world. I have been ridiculously excited for this series for years. I expected some plot and character changes, as with any adaptation. I thought the casting was great and had tons of potential.
Once I saw the trailer I thought okay, I guess its okay that Moraine is being sold as the main character (even though she is written out of multiple books in the middle of the story). I figured they had to tackle this somehow and make it digestible on a screen. I still thought we were going to get some of the tone, some of the mystery and suspense that Jordan was so great at putting into the story.
Holy hell did they ever butcher it. I've barely made it into the 2nd episode and all I can do is cringe. The villagers are supposed to be pretty naive and close knit. None of them recognized aes sedai in the story and aes sedai are supposed to be feared by most. Those things were essential for a lot of character development. I knew they were gonna sex some of it up because come on its Hollywood. But Lan and Moraine taking a bath together? Perrin is married and he accidentally kills his wife? 4 ta'veren... I mean ta'veren in the first episode. Matt is a thief with the world's worst parents? And the trollocs. Come on man. I heard this show had like an $8m per episode budget or something. Why does it look like the trollocs are cosplayers?
And multiple aes sedai killing. Moraine kills the owner of the ferry. With an Aes Sedai's skill she could have saved him. Some red sisters kill a man who can channel. This goes completely against the aes sedai's 3 oaths which are pretty central to the story in the book.
I expected to lose some depth, some of the complexity. I knew there was no way 14 books worth of material were going to make it on screen. I expected embellishments. I knew that visually showing channeling was going to be problematic. I assumed they would do what most book to TV shows do and spin each book as a season but they are mid book in episode 2. All the action and none of the story.. its a jumbled mess and even though I know the storyline by heart, I got lost multiple times in the first episode. Jordan himself said in interviews before his death he didn't want his story to be cheapened or destroyed by Hollywood BS. I'm sure he is rolling in his grave.. This is not the story I grew up reading. Maybe if I had never touched one of the books I'd be into it. I was hoping for LoTR/Harry Potter/TruBlood type story loss. This might as well be a different series.
Update:
Okay. I made myself finish episodes 2 and 3. They were significantly better with the storyline than episode 1. I'm not in love, they left out sooo much that could have helped the plot make more sense. However, I do think that once you get past that initial deeply cringe-y episode, it has some redeeming qualities. And some of the storyline is intact.
