Not as advertised, at all!
OK, look. I read all the bad reviews on this and they were older. Seen a few newer good ones so I took it all with a grain of salt and bought this because the one I really wanted was like twice as much and this seemed like a decent middle of the road option.
Yeah, I let myself be fooled this time.
This is nothing that the listing says it is.
1.) This is not cast iron. Cast iron is heavier than this for the size. Also, cast iron DOES NOT FLEX. Cast iron wont even bend if it isnt forge-hot, it will only break if you put way too much force. This flexes when you use it, which greatly reduces the effectiveness of the force you exert, and proves that this is either aluminum or cheap steel. My bet is cheap steel because aluminum will tend to hold a bend not go back. Either way it's worthless for this application even if it weren't for my second complaint:
2.) It's painted. NOT enameled like some cast iron cookware sometimes is for aesthetics and ease of care. It's just black paint so in the photo it looks like cast iron. Which is false anyways because even pre seasoned cast iron isn't deep black its darkish gray until the owner cooks on it a bunch. And you don't even cook on these so it would never turn black!
Anyways the issue is the paint comes off into the tortilla dough. At the pressure point on the handle and lid, you'll see in the picture. That's obviously not food safe because who knows what paint that is, and regardless no paint is edible.
3.) It says mexico on top but that's just a lie to make it seem more 'authentic' I guess. The sticker says China.
Don't be fooled by this listing, its a waste of your time and your money. I wanted the Victoria press that was like $50 at the time I ordered this piece of junk. At the moment the two are roughly the same price so head on over that way. I'd product link you if I knew how but I don't.
