Second Try at Finding Square Spice Jar - Second Failure
We raised, dried and hand processed herbs at our home this year and I wanted square spice jars to make up spice collections to give as gifts. I thought I'd found the perfect jars, Kamenstein Square Glass Jar with Round Glass Lid, 4-Piece Set and bought them. I was wrong. I then found these jars Kamenstein Square Glass Jar with Hinge Glass Lid, 4 Piece Set that had no reviews at the time, but looked perfect. I bought two dozen of them. They were not perfect.
Here's the skinny on my second attempt to find the perfect gift spice jar:
The Pros:
- OK volume for the amount of fresh dried herbs I wanted to give, but could have been a bit bigger.
- Big enough to get SOME measuring spoons inside (but not all).
- Glass tops and bottoms that gift recipients seemed to like very much with their little wire clasps.
- Plastic ring seal included to make jar airtight when fastened.
- Came in boxes of 4, so if you don't need a dozen, you don't have to buy a dozen.
The Cons:
- The plastic ring seal was broken on several of the jars and should have been silicon, not rigid plastic.
- As others noted, wire fasteners are flimsy, bend easily and break with even greater ease.
- Poorly constructed (a number of jars had wire that I had to re-bend to make work properly).
- Between the cheap wire & plastic seals, these won't last long being used as spice containers in the kitchen.
I used these containers because, unfortunately, I didn't unwrap them until 6 weeks after they arrived, and by then it was too late to replace them with a better product. My mistake for which I take full responsibility. Next time I need spice jars for myself or gifts, I think the 3rd time will be the charm with these Libby jars Libbey 4-1/2-Ounce Spice Jar with Lid, Set of 12
I will not be buying Kamenstein jars again for spices or herbs or anything else for that matter. Great reviews on the Libby product, so don't waste your money on these Kamenstein jars.
