This is what all the hype was about?!
What happened? Where did Metallica go wrong? I thought the departure of Jason Newsted lit a fire under these guys, but did Kirk Hammett quit, too? There's not a guitar solo to be found on this disc anywhere. Metallica suggested that I listen to this thinking about the glorius metal they created in the past. I took their advice, and cried. I cried because I realized that the once true guardians of American metal have faded. They have faded into the true obscurity that has a green tint to it. That's right... and I'm not afraid to say it... METALLICA SOLD OUT!! (For a week after this album was released, I thought that the rain was just Cliff Burton crying.) This is truly the worst thing Metallica has ever created. What kind of drums was Lars playing? That dreadful "clang-clang-clang" sound gets old during the first track. And when did James become Dr. Phil, thinking he's the only one who's gone through rehab and convincing himself he can solve the world's problems. As for Kirk... well, I'm sure I could find something to say about his lead guitar work... if there had been any. I always thought Bob Rock was a good producer (c'mon guys, you know you love "Dr. Feelgood"), but he should stay behind the board. Not even hiring the bass player from the Suicidal Tendencies can salvage these songs live. Rob Trujillo always has been amazing, but he isn't the Mirical Man. The video for "St. Anger" being shot in San Quentin was a nice touch... that's where they belong for doing this to their fans. 'Tallica wants to seem new, or nu, so they mimic the nu-metal flavor of the day. They don't realize the "Master of Puppets" is STILL on the cutting edge. Yet, I still think Metallica is still capable of bringing us more amazing metal... they just forgot how to do it. As I listen to this, I am offered one bit of joy. I can't help being glad that I downloaded the whole thing, instead of shelling out $18.99 for it. That's right, Lars. I DOWNLOADED IT!
