Stopped working after 6 weeks, NOT manufactured by Honeywell
Six weeks into using it, I suddenly got an error code "FF" on the digital display. There is no information on what this means in any online resources, nor in the user manual (which is also VERY challenging to find online, so don't lose your paper version). Symptoms of the failure: plug in the unit, it displays room temp, and then quickly displays "FF". I cleaned both filters (top and bottom), tried plugging and unplugging numerous times, holding individual and multiple buttons to force a wished for reset, reset buttons on plug, everything I could think of. There's no water in the unit, and everything is set up as instructed in the manual. No explanation of what FF means. I called Honeywell, the presumed manufacturer. Turns out they are NOT the manufacturer. They subcontract the manufacture of all portable A/C units to some company called JMATEK. 1-800-474-2147. usinfo@jmatek.com This company shuts down their support line on the weekends, and Honeywell doesn't support the product (even though it has their name on it), so they were of no help. I'll have to wait until Monday to see if JMATEK stands by their product. Will update this review when I have more information from the manufacturer. Note that prior to this failure, everything seemed to work fine. Easy setup, simple out of the box function, cools a mid-size room well, no louder than a standard window unit. But clearly there are mechanical or electronic issues that have nothing to do with product usability or cooling capacity. --------UPDATE 9/17/2018---------- I phoned their customer support line, and they picked up after a short hold. The support rep said that "FF" is an internal system failure code, and is unfortunately UNREPAIRABLE. They sent me a follow-up email, which said a replacement unit will be shipped out to me after cutting the cord and sending them a photo of the cut cord. This done, I'll await the replacement to see if it fares better. The down-side: 1) I have no idea how long it will take to replace the unit, or if the 2nd unit will be less likely to fail. 2) It is a shameful waste to cut the cord on this virtually new unit and dispose of it. After only 6 weeks of use, this whole beast has to be taken to a municipal electronics waste center. I really hope it is at least partially recyclable, because this is disturbingly, disgustingly wasteful. Especially considering that I bought the unit for its low power consumption with the hope that it would not be as environmentally taxing. I truly felt like a filthy American cutting that power cord, and half expected the severed cord to bleed. Hopefully my unit's malfunction is an anomaly, but I would urge prospective buyers to thoroughly research this unit - and it's actual manufacturer - before making a commitment.
