Don't buy this vacuum cleaner!!
I purchased this vacuum and initially loved it! However, the honeymoon was over after 10 months of use. The vacuum would turn off whenever the handle was at an angle (so if you pushed forward, it turned off). I brought it to the authorized repair service and haven't seen it since -- and it's been over two months. The repair service isn't the problem. They say Hoover uses a complicated electronic board system that is made in China. The boards are not made available to the repair shops until a faulty vacuum is brought in. Up to three different boards could be faulty but Hoover insists on following a one by one repair procedure. The parts come from China and take up to 6 weeks to arrive. My vacuum is waiting for its second board to arrive (the first one didn't solve the problem).
BTW, I emailed Hoover after 6 weeks asking for a replacement vacuum since mine was still under warranty. Guess what?! No response. The repair shop warned me it would be a waste of time. They don't recommend Hoovers any longer.
So, if you have a Hoover Platinum and it holds up - you're happy. If not, you've been suckered into a Hoover-made disaster.
Quick update: my Hoover Platinum has now been in the repair shop for 3 months. What a worthless warranty....
Update #2: My vacuum went in the repaire shop 7-28-2010 and remains there today, 12-6-2010. I've contacted Hoover 4 times and I just get dumped into someone's voicemail box with a promise they will get back to me. I'm going to try one more time today but have not any hope of resolution. Save yourself from having this nightmare - just don't buy a Hoover!
Update #2.1: Hooray! I finally spoke to someone who could resolve the problem. I'm getting a new vacuum sent priority mail! TTFN!
