Great machine other than water in the handle and terrible customer service, product returned
This is a highly mixed review as the machine did what it was supposed to, however there was a defect in the bowl handle, and I could not get an explanation from customer service. The defect showed up immediately after purchase; water collected in in the handle of the bowl with just the directed gentle hand washing in the sink. Even turning the bowl over to dry, there was still water collected inside the handle for two days. One must wonder about mold development in the handle and water migrating from the connection of the handle to machine. This is the third food processor I have owned in 40 years of cooking. Food processors are my favorite go to kitchen appliance. When my current machine was fading I read all the reviews in consumer 'journals' and amazon. Clearly the Breville was the way to go. My spouse encouraged to 'go for the best'. I looked at the larger capacity in store but choose the 12 cup smaller unit as it suited my family's needs. I used it five times in ten days and each time water collected in the handle. The worst was when water went about 1/3 the way up inside the handle. Then I paused using it for five days, allowing for more than sufficient drying time. Next time I turned it on the start and pause buttons were not working as smoothing as they had previously, in fact at times not working at all. It made me wonder if water somehow got into the switch. When I first reported the problem by email, a customer service rep did call and we discussed the problem, she did not have an explanation. She sent me a replacement, which arrived about ten business days later. However she sent a lid, not the bowl. Then I entered a ten day period of customer service non responsiveness. I called and left my number four times on the company support line. I never heard back from them. I even left two different numbers, home and cell. Problem with brand new machine, wrong replacement part and now, non responsive customer service. It was trying my patience. At that point, I emailed back and did get after 3 business days a phone call. The 'email' customer service person insisted she sent me the correct part, but I pointed out there is no handle on the lid/cover. It turns out she had heard of this problem only once before on the bigger machine. The smaller one is too new, less than a year old, that there is no bowl replacement yet being made. So in the end I returned it to place of purchase, Bed, Bath and Beyond. The manager and I took their floor model and took it to their break room and 'washed' the bowl in the sink. Low and behold, water immediately found its way into the handle. Not as much as mine, but it is clearly NOT a closed system handle. Clearly the handle is designed on both sizes to NOT be a closed system. I suspect I got a machine where the handle 'hole' was just a bit too big. The thoroughly annoying part of all this, the machine does what it needs to do beautifully, best I have ever had, and it was not easy spending that kind of money on a kitchen appliance. The level of customer service added insult to injury. Not sure what I am going to do about replacing my current fading fast food processor.
